What is Timbuktu famous for?
Timbuktu is famous because of its thriving centre for trade and learning.
What goods did it trade and with who?
North Africa got: Cotton from Timbuktu and gave them: Ceramics, silk, cloth and beads.
India and China got: African ivory from Timbuktu and gave them: Silk and ceramics.
Arabia got: Gold, ivory, wood and slaves from Timbuktu and gave them: Ornaments, weapons and utensils.
Thaghaza got: Gold, slaves and kola nuts from Timbuktu and gave them: Salt.
What are world heritage sites and why is it important that we preserve them?
A world heritage site is a natural or human-made site, area or structure recognised to have outstanding international importance and therefore be deserving of special protection. We should preserve world heritage sites because it keeps the history of what has happens in the past alive and insures that younger generations are educated.
What famous Mosques can you find in Timbuktu?
The Great Mosque of Djenne can be found in Mali.
Why have the Mosques lasted for so long?
The mosques where made of large bricks made by mixing sand, limestone, clay, water, straw, sticks and manure together and leaving it to dry in the hot sun. They also build poles that were sticking out which could be climbed on for repairs. This method of building proved to be very strong as the mosques lasted 600 years.
How did they build the mosques?
They used large bricks that were made by mixing sand, limestone, clay, water, straw, sticks and manure together and leaving them in the hot sun to dry. They were shaped into 3 large towers called minarets. Poles stuck out of these big structure to make it strong and these were used to climb on for repairs. This method of building proved to be very strong as the mosques lasted 600 years.
