Technique used on string instruments. Trembling, quivering.

The high eerie sounds produced on a bowed string instrument by lightly touching the string at certain points. On a guitar these will sound bell-like.

Term for (usually, but not always) high, florid vocal singing involving scales, runs and ornaments. Sometimes these passages were written down, but often were extemporised by the performer.

In baroque music, especially concerto grosso, the term means the main group of instrumentalists as opposed to the small/solo group which was known as the concertino.

In a concertino grosso this is the name given to the small, solo group of instrumentalists as opposed to the main group, the ripieno.

What is: String quartet?
A chamber music ensemble consisting of first and second violins, viola, and cello. The string quartet is one of the most prominent chamber ensembles in classical music, with most major composers, from the late 18th century onwards, writing string quartets.

A small group of instruments of the same family playing together, eg: a consort of viols. The term usually applies to music from the renaissance period.

A male adult voice that is higher than a Tenor’s. The strong and pure tones is produced by resonances mainly in the head. This type of voice was very popular until the end of the 18th century.

A technique used in vocal music where the singer is required to use the voice in an expressive manner half-way between singing and speaking.it appears in a number of pieces by Schoenberg and Berg (Early 20th century)
