Timbers Flashcards
Softwood
Called coniferous trees, mainly grow in a cool climate, they have a looser grain structure, needles or scale like leaves, often used in building materials, mostly evergreen trees, grow tall and straight which makes it easier to manufactor and cut. Cheeper the hardwood
Hardwood
You can have evergreen hardwood trees which do not lose there leaves and Deciduous trees which loses there flat leaves in winter, tend to have a tighter grain, they can be very expensive, most evergreens are found in tropical or sub-tropical countries, usually quite hard, generally grow in temperate climates including the British Isles, they are slower growing trees it can take 100 years to grow fully
Manufactured board
Boards are available in many thicknesses, boards are inexpensive so are often used instead of real woods, manufactured boards are often covered with a thin layer of real wood which is called veneer this improves their appearance or properties, often made using waste wood, developed mainly for industrial production as they can be made in very large sheets of consistent quality
How are manufactured boards produced.
Manufactured boards are timber sheets which are produced by gluing wood layers or wood fibers together
Examples of softwood ( evergreen)
Larch, pine and spruce
Propeties of larch and common use
Water proof, moisture movement small, texture fine.
Flooring, yachts
Properties of pine and common uses
Easy to form, harder then some hardwods, moisture movement medium.
manufacturing of windows, construction framing and generating sheet goods
Properties of spruce and common uses
Straight grain, medium dencity, easy to saw
Construction, flooring
Examples of hardwoods ( deciduous)
Ash, beech, oak
Properties of ash and common uses
Tough, flexible, wide grain
Sports equipment, ladders
Properties of beech and common uses
Abration reasistance, tough, straight grained
Sports equiptment, cooking utensils
Properties of oak and common uses
Strong, heavy, durable, fungi resistant
