You can tell if a tree is a hardwood or soft wood tree by its leaves. If the leaves look like needles, it is from a evergreen tree. If a leaf has a large surface area, it is from a deciduous tree

Q

Why is hardwood expensive

A

Deciduous trees grow slower, because for half the year they are not growing at all. Thus they can not be replaced as quickly. This means that hardwood is generally more expensive, harder to get and becoming shorter in supply.
