Tie strength Flashcards
Embeddedness
the number of common neighbors shared by the two endpoints of the edge
Neighborhood overlap
for an edge connecting A and B, the ratio -
number of nodes who are neighbors of both A and B: number of nodes who are neighbors of at least one of A or B
Local bridge
an edge joining nodes A and B only if A and B have no friends in common
Span
span of a local bridge is the distance its endpoints would be from each other if the edge were deleted
Triadic closure
If two people in a social network have a friend in common, there is an increased likelihood that they too will becoma friends at some point in the future
Clustering coefficient
the probability that two randomly selected friends of node A are friends with each other
Structural hole
the “empty space” between 2 sets of nodes that do not otherwise interact
advantage 1: early access to info originating in multiple noninteracting parts
advantage 2: unexpected synthesis of multiple ideas
advantage 3: social “gatekeeping”…regulates access
Disadvantage: less embedded, less protected
