Q

Why is the use of the kuleshov effect during the opening sequence valuable?

A
  • The use of archival footage of conflicts and the cuts to MT, links to constructing the idea of her being responsible for the conflict and suffering of the working class

Q

Why is the use of the costuming if Shaun in oversized clothing valuable?

A
  • the use of costuming in a christmas jumper and oversized jumper of Shaun is valuable as it links to constructing the representation of Shaun as impoverished,
  • making Shaun stand out as a binary opposition from others, emphasising the idea of Shaun not fitting in as his mother doesn’t have money for new clothing
  • links to the idea of austerity within Thatcherism, prioritising the idea of self sufficiency, looking after yourself and not asking for ‘hand-outs’, leading to people in situations like Shaun’s family suffering

Q

Why is the use of the performance of Combo during the robbing of Mr Sandhu’s shop valuable?

A
  • The use of performance with combo’s dialect, using the racial slur is valuable to constructing his ideogological standpoint (BNF) based around racial discrimination
  • The use of performance as he holds up the machete like a sword and the use of the word “slay” suggests that Combo views himself as a hero, doing a valiant, heroic act for his country - BNF values based in patriotism

Q

Why is the use of performance of Lenny at the BNF rally, “Brothers… will you join the fight?” valuable?

A
  • the use of performance here links to the the construction of how BNF values are centered around the idea of patriotism to the UK/public
  • Moreover the chanting I’m agreement by the costumed stereotypically working class people, links to constructing the idea of the working class being taken advantage of and manipulated by the BNF

Q

Why is Combos prosecution of Mr Sandhu hypocrite of Lenny’s speech?

A

this links to constructing the idea of BNF many of its members simply being racist etc, which shows the hypocrisy of Lennys statement that the BNF are ‘realists’ and not interested in those who ‘worked their way here’. However, Mr Sandhu, a man who owns a business and has worked his way into the country/doesn’t ask for help/benefits, is still prosecuted and attacked by Combo
