Tides Of Earth Flashcards
What are tides?
-Tides are the cyclic rise and fall of the ocean water along the coastlines of earth.
-Tidal chances can occur in all bodies of water but are most noticeable in oceans.
-As the tide comes in, water level rises. As the tide goes out, water falls.
What are the two types of tides?
High and low
What do the two types of rides do?
High tides- when the water level reaches its highest point
Low tides- when the water level reaches its lowest point
What is the cause of high and low tides?
Tides are caused by the interaction of the earth with the moon and sun
The gravity between the earth, moon and sun causes the change in tides.
Is the moon or sun closer to earth?
Since the moon is closer to the earth, it has a strong gravitational pull on it.
2.2 times the force of the sun
What is gravity?
The force exerted by an object that pulls other objects toward it.
Tidal bulges
High tides
No tidal bulges
Low tides
Most coastlines have how many tides per day?
Four tides per say, two high tides and two low tides.
How long does it take from one tire to the next?
About 6 hours and 12 minutes
When does spring tides occur
(tide wise)
When water levels have the most difference between high and low tide
When does a spring tide occur
(time wise)
Twice a month: new moon and full moon when the earth, moon and sun are lined up
When do Hewo tides occur?
(Tide wise)
When water levels have the least difference between high and low tide
When do Neal rides occur
(Time wise)
Twice a month: first quarter and last quarter when the moon and sun are at right angles to eachother
