Tides Flashcards
What causes tide
Tide is caused by the gravitational pull of moon and sun
What is spring tide and what causes it?
Spring tide is the highest monthly tidal range. Caused by when moon, sun and earth are in straight line.
What is neap tide and what caused it?
Neap tide is lowest monthly tidal range. Caused by when moon and sun are positioned at 90(D) in relation to earth.
What is tidal range?
Tidal range is the difference in height of sea water at low and high tide
What does macrotidal mean?
Macrotidal is areas where tidal range exceeds 4 metres
What does mesotidal mean?
Mesotidal is tidal range between 2-4 m
What does microtidal mean?
Tidal range below 2 metres
How does tidal range influences the development of coastline
Tidal range influences the development of coastline by determning the area exposed to subaerial weathering.
What is tidal surge?
When wind produces much higher water levels
Effect of 1mb drop in pressure?
Sealevel rises by 1 centimetre
Why does the east coast of Britain experiences tidal surge?
East coast of britain has low pressure
