9
Q

What are spring tides?

A

Spring tides are when the sun and moon are aligned (either both on same side of earth or opposite each other)

10
Q

Why are spring tides larger than neap tides?

A

Because the gravitational force of the sun and moon is combined where as neap tides (1/4; 3/4) are when the sun and moon are out of alignment so the Fg of each is opposing each other.

Q

What is a quadrature?

A

A 1/4, 3/4 new moon when the sun and moon are not aligned and so the Fg of the sun and moon work against each other reducing bulge size and therefore tide size.

Q

There are 2 spring tides per month, why is one larger than the other?

A

Perigee is larger then apogee as this is when sun and moon are on the same side of the earth. Apogee is when sun and moon are on opposite sides of the earth.

16
Q

What is a Aphelion tide?

A

When the earth is farthest from the sun annually (july. 2.) it is a fixed cycle

17
Q

What causes tides?

A

Tides are caused by the gravitational pill of the sun and moon acting on the ocean forming bulges. The moons gravitational pull has the greatest effect and so the primary bulge is always facing towards the moon and the secondary bulge is directly on the opposite side of the planet.

18
Q

What affects gravitational pull

A

Fg is proportional to distance (d) and mass (m )
