What are the clinical manifestations of Babesiosis?
- infection can range from asymptomatic to life-threatening.
- Fevers, sweats, malaise, headache, myalgia, arthralgia, anorexia, nausea, dark urine
- Mild splenomegaly, mild hepatomegaly or jaundice
What is the incubation period for Babesiosis?
1 to 9+ weeks
Which laboratory abnormalities are associated with Babesiosis?
- Decreased hematocrit due to hemolytic anemia
- Thrombocytopenia
- Elevated SCr/BUN
- Mildly elevated hepatic transaminase values
Which treatment regimens are used for Babesiosis?
Atovaquone + Azithromycin
Clindamycin + Quinine (Standard of care for severe babesiosis - parasitemia >10% and/or organ-system dysfunction)
Treat typically for 7-10 days
