Thyroid - normal physiology Flashcards
1
Q
What is the structure of the thyroid gland?
A
2 lateral lobes connected by an isthmus
2
Q
What do the thyroid follicles contain?
A
Colloid
3
Q
What is made in the colloid?
A
Thyroid hormones
4
Q
What are the follicles lined with?
A
- Thyroid follicular cells
- C-cells
5
Q
What do thyroid follicular cells make?
A
Thyroglobulin
6
Q
What do C-cells make?
A
Calcitonin
7
Q
Give a brief overview of how thyroid hormones are synthesised.
A
- TSH stimulates thyroid follicular cells (TFCs) to make thyroglobulin (Tg)
- Thyroid peroxidase ioninates Tg
- Lysosomes hydrolyse the ionated Tg and release T3 and T4
- T3 and T4 are bound to thyroid-binding globulin (TBG) in the blood
- T4 is deiodinated in the blood to form active T3
8
Q
Does the thyroid release more T3 or T4?
A
T4 (X10)
9
Q
What are thyroid hormones important for?
A
- Metabolism (glucose absorption and genesis)
- Oxygen consumption
- Cardiac output
- BP
- Growth
- Brain development
- Sexual maturation
10
Q
Through what receptors do the thyroid hormones act?
A
Adrenal
