Q

What is rT3?

A

It is an isomer of T3 which is not very common and is unhelpful

Q

What is the steps for the synthesis of thyroid hormones?

A
  • Follicular cells produce enzymes and thyroglobulin for colloid
  • I- is co-transported with Na+ into the colloid
  • Enzymes add iodine to thyroglobulin to make T3 and T4
  • Thyroglobulin is taken back into the cell and enzymes seperate T3 and T4 from protein
  • Free T3 and T4 enter the circulation

16
Q

What do thyroid hormones do?

A
  • Increase mitochondrial activity and glucose oxidation
  • Increase basal metabolic rate and heat production
17
Q

What three thing stimulate thyroid hormone production?

A
  • Low levels of thyroid hormones
  • Low metabolic rate
  • Decreased body temp
18
Q

What is hyperthyroidism?

A

Too much thyroid hormones secreted

19
Q

What is the most common disease associated to hyperthyroidism?

A

Grave’s disease

20
Q

What causes Grave’s disease?

A

When the body produces thyroid stimulating immunoglobins which mimic the action of TSH resulting in too much T3 and T4

21
Q

What are signs and symptoms of Grave’s disease?

A
  • Muscle weakness
  • Muscle tremor
  • Rapid heartbeat
  • Enlarged thyroid gland
22
Q

What is primary hypothyroidism?

A

When the thyroid gland does not make enough thyroid hormones due to iodine deficiency

23
Q

What is secondary hypothyroidism?

A

When the body does not produce enough TSH due to a tumour of the anterior pituitary

24
Q

What is tertiary hypothyroidism?

A

When the hypothalamus does not make enough TRH

25
Q

What are the signs and symptoms of hypothyroidism?

A
  • Slow oxygen consumption
  • Slow speech
  • Slow heartbeat
26
Q

What is the most common disease associated with hypothyroidism?
