THYROID GLAND PARATHYROID GLAND Flashcards
The thyroid gland develops from the
endodermal lining of the floor of the primitive
pharynx
The primordium grows caudally and forms a
duct like invagination known as
Throglossal duct.
Follicular epithelium contains
two types of cells
-Follicular and
-Parafollicular cells
The follicles contain a gel-like
mass called
colloid
Follicular cells (principal cells)
T3 T4 production
Basophilic o
1 or 2 prominent nucleoli
Abundant lysosomes and endocytic
vesicles, identified as colloidal
resorption droplets
Parafollicular cells (C cells - clear cells)
They secrete calcitonin
• An extensive network of fenestrated capillaries derived from the ………………………. surrounds the follicles
Superior and inferior thyroid arteries
SYNTHESIS OF THYROID
HORMONE
1-Synthesis of thyroglobulin
2- Resorption, diffusion and
oxidation of iodide
3-Iodination of thyroglobulin
4-Formation of T3 and T4 by
oxidative coupling reactions
5-Resorption of colloid
6-Release of T4 and T3 into the
circulation and recycling
