Thyroid Disease Flashcards
what controls the thyroid ?
the pituitary gland
what hormone is released from the pituitary gland to stimulate the thyroid?
thyroid stimulatory hormone
what is hyperthyroidism?
production of excess thyroid hormones
what is the most common cause of hyperthyroidism?
graves disease (primary failure)
what is the role of antibodies in hyperthyroidism?
autoimmune disease- antibodies bind to TSH receptors and trigger excess release of T3 hormones from thyroid
what are the signs of hyperthyroidism?
-warm skin
-increased HR- tachycardia
-increased BP
-goitre at base of neck
-eyelid retraction
-tremors
what are the symptoms of hyperthyroidism?
INCREASED METABOLISM
-weight loss
-sweating
-palpitations
-anxiety
-irritable
what are the signs of graves disease ?
-goitre
-proptosis (eyeball bulging)
-eyelid retraction
-family history
-conjunctival oedema (chemosis)
what indicates primary gland failure hyperthyroidism?
T3- raised
TSH- low
what indicates secondary failure hyperthyroidism? (uncommon)
T3 raised
TSH raised
what are the treatments of hyperthyroidism?
-carbimazole- lowers T3
-beta blockers- reduce anxiety, tremors and - palpitations
-radioiodine
-surgery-thyroidectomy
what are the dental aspects of hyperthyroidism?
-goitre can be seen clinically
-anxiety/decision making may affect treatment
-if unstable postpone irreversible treatment
-if treated-treat as normal
what is hypothyroidism?
thyroid hormone deficiency
what is the most common cause of hypothyroidism?
hashimotos disease
what is the role of antibodies in hypothyroidism?
autoimmune- antibodies attack thyroid gland causing inflammation and fibrosis of thyroid tissue
