What is the location of the thyroid?
Anterior to trachea and below the thyroid cartilage. It is on the anterior surface of the larynx

They are responsible for making thyroid hormones

Contains 2 lobes that are connected by an isthmus

They are tyrosine (amino acid) based

They are able to cross the cell membrane easily and affect most cells in the body
What does the thyroid bind to?
Binds to receptors on the mitochondria and in the nucleus
What is the function of mitochondria?
Increases ATP production
What is the function of the nucleus?
Increases enzyme synthesis
What are thyroid hormones essential for?
They are essential for normal development in skeletal, muscular, and nervous systems
What is true about thyroid hormones and mitochondria?
Because thyroid hormones affect the mitochondria, defects in the thyroid can cause major metabolic issues
