Thrust Reversers Flashcards
Describe thrust reversal
Thrust reversal is the reversing of the exhaust flow to provide an amount of forward acting thrust for the purpose of assisting aircraft deceleration.
What angle does the exhaust system change the gas flow
135º
Explain purpose and operation of thrust reversal
Slow aircraft and reduce brake usage and slipping on a wet runway. Can only be operated at a higher ground speed to prevent debris from entering engine intake.
Describe the various types of thrust reverser
Bucket reversers - low bypass turbine engine. Use a pair of hydraulically- operated bucket type doors to reverse hot gas stream that are mounted on the outside of exhaust jet pipe.
Clamshell reversers - similar, but pneumatically or hydraulically operated and are installed after the turbine but before the exhaust nozzle
When operated, the blocker doors rotate to open ducts and close the normal exhaust It is this that makes them different from the bucket type reversers discussed above
Coldstream thrust reversers - only on high bypass turbines, actuated hydraulically or pneumatically and operate by deflecting the bypass cold air.
