Through the Looking Glass Flashcards
How are asterisks used in Through the Looking Glass?
when Alice moves a square
What is Through the Looking Glass based on?
based on chess, Alice is a pawn
the world is initially constrained by what the looking glass sees when Alice is still stationed somewhat in reality at the beginning
What is the exposition of Through the Looking Glass
Alice plays chess and with a kitten - she imagines what the world through the looking glass would be like and gets so close to the mirror that she can see what’s happening in that world, and begins to explore the Looking Glass world
she finds the Jabberwocky poem, except its written backwards so she can only read it held up to a mirror
Who does Alice talk to when she enters the Looking Glass world?
she meets and chats with the flowers
the Red Queen flies over and chats with Alice - she’s the one that tells her how she has to travel to be a queen (Alice follows these steps throughout the book)
What is unique about Through the Looking Glass?
everything that is said to happen in the book happens, lots of discussion about names, blurred lines between eaters and food
Where does Alice go after talking to the Red Queen for the first time?
she gets on a train, and then she travels through the forest of no names, she forgets her, but a fawn leads her to it
What happens when Alice meets Tweedledum and Tweedledee?
they are the personification of elements in a folk poem - the poem is lived out in this chapter
Tweedledee tells the story of the walrus and the carpenter
the Tweedles begin to fight, and a large crow flies overhead casting a shadow which Alice runs away from
What is the story of the walrus and the carpenter?
the characters in the story (Walrus and the carpenter) manipulate children oysters to be their friends so they can eat them
Who does Alice talk to after the Tweedles? Why are they important?
the White Queen, she talks to Alice about living backwards (looking glass) - “you have a memory of the future and a memory of the past”
she’s the disorderly queen -> always a little frayed
the queen turns into a sheep, they row around on a river
they end up in a shop and Alice wants to buy and egg that turns into Humpty Dumpty
Who is Humpty Dumpty? Why is he important?
personification of a folk tale
performs a literary analysis of Jabberwocky, claiming to have a good approach to language
he also recites a poem about little fishes
we hear a crash as Alice leaves, the king’s horses and men run to him (he had a great fall)
Who is the White Knight? Why is he important?
after watching a lion and a unicorn fight with the White King, a red knight claims Alice as his prisoner - the White Knight comes to her rescue
after chatting, he leads Alice to a brook where if she crosses it she can be a queen
What happens after Alice turns into a queen?
the other queens appeared beside her and after she questioned them, they quizzed her math abilities with nonsense questions
she is transported to the feast being had in her honour
What happens at the feast?
Alice is introduced to the leg of mutton and pudding (thus she cannot eat them)
the feast ends with the diners becoming food (the food and the dishes go wild)
Alice takes the red queen and shakes her, she turns into a kitten
How is Through the Looking Glass resolved?
Alice wakes up and it was all a dream, although who’s dream it was is up in the air
the last three chapters are short and disorienting as Alice transitions from Wonderland to the real world
