Thromboembolism Flashcards
1
Q
Types of Venous (returning to the heart) Embolism
A
DVT
Pulmonary Embolism
2
Q
Virchow’s Triad
A
Stasis (i.e. bed rest)
Endothelial damage (i.e. trauma, central line)
Hypercoagulability (i.e. cancer, pregnancy)
3
Q
Partial Thromboplastin Time (PTT)
A
- Measures pathway for clot formation
- measures how fast blood clots
- Normal value: 60- 70 seconds
- Tracks with IV Heparin
4
Q
Activated Partial Thromboplastin Time (APTT)
A
- activators added to PTT to shorten normal clotting time and provide a more narrow normal range
- Quicker than PTT
- Normal Value: 30- 40 seconds
- Tracks with IV Heparin
5
Q
Prothrombin Time (PT, Protime, International Normalized Ratio (INR)
A
- evaluates the mechanisms for clotting.
- Normal values PT: 11.0-12.5 seconds (depends on reagents)
- tracked by warfarin
6
Q
International Normalized Ratio (INR)
A
- gives HCP’s from around the world the ability to report uniform prothrombin time (PT) results without respect to methods or reagents.
- Normal values INR: 0.8-1.1
