Thrombi, emboli and coagulation Flashcards
What are the two main reasons clots don’t form all the time?
Laminar flow - cells generally don’t touch the vessel walls (they flow down the middle)
Endothelial cells aren’t ‘sticky’ when healthy
What are venous thrombi most likely to cause? arterial thrombi?
Venous thrombi - PE
Arterial thrombi - heart attack / stroke
Give three examples of less common causes of emboli?
air
cholesterol crystals
tumour
Four general steps of clotting?
Give the classes of drug used to treat i) arterial thrombosis ii) venous thrombosis
Arterial Thrombosis- Anti-Platelets e.g Aspirin/Clopidogrel (1)
Venous Thrombosis- Anti-Coagulants e.g Warfarin, Heparin, NOAC (1)
what blood test can test for DVT?
why is the D-dimer blood test for DVT not very specific?
