Acute sore throat
Most viral -> supportive treatment
Can be bacterial (pyogenes) –> antibiotics
Recurrent sore throat
may be due to immunosuppression (HIV, transplant, Diabetes, oral steroids) or malignancy
treatment is often elective surgery (tonsilectomy
Waldeger’s Ring
A ring of lymphoid tissue in the throat
lingual, palantine, tubal and adenoids
Differential for sore throat
tonsilitis, glandular fever, peritonsilar abscess, pharyngitis, AIDs, crohn’s, epiglottitis, diphtheria
Acute Epiglottitis
odema due to HIB
presents with dysphagia,
rarely occurs in children with rapid onset and stridor
Diphtheria
Rare in britain due to vaccination
10% mortality, malaise, pseudomembrane and neurological complications
Throat Neoplasms
Salivary gland tumours –> a deep medial bulge in the lateral wall
Lymphoma
Squamous cell carcinoma
Treatment of acute tonsilitis
IV fluids, analgesia, penicillin G, drain the pus
Tonsillectomy –»5 attack/year or 2 peritonsillar abscesses.
also in case of sleep apnoea or rheumatic fever or GN
