Three Part Scale Realization Flashcards
Fauxbourdon
Beginning with an octave plus the third, the two lower voices rise by step as the top voice descends by a step creating a 6/3 which then rises. As the bass reaches the octave, the two top voice descends a third and the middle voice descends a step to create an incomplete tonic chord. All voices reverse that move to begin the descent of the pattern to the first incomplete chord.
Melodic minor requires the usual adjustments.
The Monte
Ascending pattern only
Beginning with a triad, the fifth moves up by step on the weak beat, after which the lower voices ascend on the strong beat.
The upper voices can be inverted.
The Monte with Thirds and Sixths
Ascending pattern only with ties in the middle voice
Beginning with an open triad, on the weak beat the top voice (third) ascends a fourth as the middle voice (fifth) moves up by step and ties to the next downbeat where top voice descends a third and the bass ascends a step to complete the first 7-6 in the chain.
The 7-6 Faubourdon
Descending pattern only
This begins like The Monte with the fifth of a triad ascending by step and tied to the next measure, at which the other two voices descend with the tying voice resolving to start the 7-6 chain. The top voices can be inverted.
The Stepwise Romanesca
Descending pattern only
Voices starting on the tonic and third descend in thirds as a third voice starting on the third:
moves up a third then down a fifth or
moves down a third every other move of the other two voices.
The Leaping Romanesca
Voices on the root and third descend by step as the bass voice starting on the tonic descends down a fourth then up a step. (Pachelbel canon)
This active voice could be the top voice moving up a fifth down a seventh with ornamentation.
Fifth Down Fourth Up
Similar to the 7-6 Fauxbourdon, this starts with the voice on the fifth ascending a step and tying on the weak beat as the bass descends a fifth then up a fourth on the suspension while the voice starting on the third descends by step on the strong beat creating a 7/3 chain.
The Tied Bass
Beginning with a triad, the voice on the fifth ascends by step on the weak beat while the bass ties to the next measure where the remaining voice descends by step while the active voice descends a third and then ascends a step as the bass resolves the suspension creating a 4/2 6/3 chain.
