threats to biodiversity-- invasive species Flashcards
what is a non-native species?
species that do not originate in the area or region
what 4 ways is a non-native species introduced into a new environment?
- accidentally in shipments
- economic
- control other species
- release of pets
what is an invasive species?
a non-native species that has a negative impact on the natural environment
usually, what happens to a non-native species?
they cannot tolerate their new environment and do not survive
occasionally, what happens to a non-native species?
they survive but have no negative impact on the ecosystem
when do non-native species become invasive species?
when there is a negative impact
why does the population of invasive species grow very quickly?
there are very few abiotic and biotic factors that stop them from growing
what are 4 negative impacts of invasive species?
- population of native species will decrease because of higher competition for food
- infect native species with disease
- damage forests / farmland / fisheries
- change the local environment
what 3 ways can be used to minimize invasive species?
- chemical method (pesticide)
- mechanical method (physical barrier)
- biological method (introducing a predator)
what is the problem with the chemical method?
pesticides hurt other organisms
what is the problem with the mechanical method?
the barrier is not 100% effective
what is the problem with the biological method?
the predator may eat other species
