Threaded Pipe Flashcards
Bushing
Have internal and external thread. One male and one female. Connects a male to female pipe
Reducer
Pipe fitting with 2 female threads. Connects a larger male to a smaller male pipe
Elbows
Most common are 45s and 90s
NPT
National pipe thread. 1/16 in taper per in
Nipple
Anything 12in and under
Tee
One side outlet 90 degrees to the run
Union
Join two ends of pipe that can’t be turned or permits the future disconnection of pipes without cutting them.
Wye
Fitting that has a side outlet of 45 degrees to the run
Advantages of threaded pipe
No special fabrication, can use kettle threading equipment, safer cause needs no welding, and can clean the inside
Disadvantages of threaded pipe
More prone to leaking, threading process reduces wall thickness, and can’t be used if erosion, extreme shock, or vibration is anticipated.
Pipe schedules
STD- standard wall (40)
XS- extra strong wall (80-160)
XXS- double extra strong wall
Pipe fittings
Elbows, offset, and return bends (90 & 45)
Branch connections (tee & wye)
Caps (male) plugs (female)
Teflon tape
Can’t be used on anything that carries hot temps. Can be put on caustics and oxygen lines
How many turns when putting on pipe
3-4 hand tight and 3 wrench. Should be 7 total
Concentric
Fitting with the center line together with pipe
Eccentric
Fitting where the centerline is offset
City water pipe
Stainless, copper, and galvanized
