thought perception Flashcards
what is thought form?
how the patient is thinking
logicality and coherence of somebodys thoughts and whether they string together in a way one would expect
what is thought content?
prominent themes: what the patient is thinking
presence of hallucinations or delusions
subject matter: subject patient is discussing
what are some examples of distorts in thought form?
various abnormalities of thought form
lots of detours to get to gal or miss the goal entirely
few identifiable connections between thoughts , do they jump between things?
are the thought connections identifiable but really speeded up
flight of ideas- loose connections between them often to do with money, spirituality, capitalism
long way around things: schizophrenia
what are the different types of delusions?
common ones that are seen are delusions of reference: someone is talking about you, delusions of misinterpretation: you believe that your partner has been replaced by an imposter, delusions of persecution: you believe that secret services are coming to get you
delusions of thought interference: mind is being read- people have access to mind, thought insertion, thought echo: thoughts echoed out onto radio, thought broadcast
delusion of passivity: abducted by aliens, subject to other forces and body is not their own
very serious depression: holistic delusions- no longer exist or insides have been dissolved away, might be dead
held with 100% certainty
sexual, pregnancy, guilt/ esteem, appearance
what were the historical ‘first rank’ symptoms of schizophrenia?
thought insertion, withdrawal and broadcasting
all under the umbrella of thought possession
what is delusions?
held with 100% certainty no matter how absurd they sound
what are the 3 different types of thinking?
delusions
obsession
over-valued idea
what is an over-valued idea?
it is something that somebody believes but without 100% certainty
eg: belief that you were abducted by aliens as a child but if we talk that through, room for manoevre - don’t definitely know but cant account for this period in my life but i believe in aliens so that is my likeliest explanation
what is obsession thoughts?
people recognise it is their own thoughts so these are not psychotic but they are recurrent, obtrusive thoughts
part of OCD
problems to do with thoughts but rather than in essence being external to you, they are internal thoughts- distressing
example: Did i lock the door, repeat over and over again go back home and check 3 or 4 times the obssessional thought keeps coming back
what are illusions?
perceptual distortions
what are hallucinations?
the different sensual types of hallucinations and examples of mental disorder for each one?
perceptual deceptions
most common is auditory hallucination
visual ones rare- related to common causes- alcohol withdrawl, other forms of delirium, dementia: lewys body dementia similar pathology to parkinsons
somatic hallucination: feeling things on body, heroin withdrawal
olfactory also occur, psychotic depression
what is depersonalisation and derealisation?
symptoms experienced in depression and anxiety
depersonalisation: not a real person, detached from world, looking in at themselves from outside
derealisation: area around you is not real
