Thorax Wall And Cavity Flashcards
How many parts is the thorax made up of and what are they?
2 parts the thorax wall and the thorax cavity
What is the purpose of the thoracic wall?
To protect the lungs and heart, protects lactative tissue and makes the breathing movement
What is the purpose of the thoracic cavity?
It contains and holds major blood vessels, organs and cells.
Contains the mediastinum and the left and right pleural cavity.
IT IS WITHIN THE CHEST WALL.
What are the 3 parts of the sternum from top to bottom.
Manubrium
Sternum angle (at the transverse plane between the manubrium and the body)
The body
The xyphoid process
What are the palpable parts of the sternum?
The jugular notch above the manubrium.
The sternal angle in between the manubrium and the body of the sternum. This is at T4 posteriorly and the 2nd rib (a true rib)
What is the thoracic inlet?
This is the space above rib 1 and at T1, superior to the manubrium. It contains major blood vessels
What is the thoracic outlet?
Between false ribs 7-10 and lateral to ribs 11-12 and contains the xyphoid process which is at T12. The anterior of the outlet contains the diaphragm to separate the abdomen from the thoracic cavity.
What ways does the thoracic wall move during breathing?
Anteroposterior increase- lifting up a pump handle
Transverse increase of the ribs- lifting a bucket with 2 handles
Vertical increase by the downward pull of the diaphragm.
