173
Q

Origin of Posterior intercostals:

A

Supreme intercostal arteries (intercostal spaces 1 and 2) and thoracic aorta (remaining intercostal spaces)

174
Q

Origin of Anterior intercostals:

A

Internal thoracic arteries (intercostal spaces 1-6) and musculophrenic arteries (intercostal spaces 7-9)

175
Q

Blood Supply to the lungs:

A
  1. Left bronchial arteries from the aorta
  2. right bronchial arteries (from intercostal arteries, aorta, or left bronchial artery)
176
Q

Innervation of Lungs:

A

Sympathetics:
Post ganglionic sympatheitc pathway via the right and left pulmonary plexuses

Parasympathetics:
Vagus Nerve via same plexuses

177
Q

What is pulmonary collapse?

A

Air infiltrating the pleural cavity (pnemothorax) can break surface tension between the visceral and parietal pleura. When this happens, the elastic lung tissue will recoil (collapse) leaving air filled space wihtin the pleural cavity that prevents expansion of the lung during inspiration

178
Q

Hemothorax, Hydrothorax, and Chylothorax

A

Other substances such as blood, from a penetrating wound, serous fluid, or lymph that infiltrated the pleural cavity may also cause the lung to collapse

179
Q

Pleuritis (pleurisy)

A

Inflammation of the pleura, may cause “scrapbing sounds” during auscultation and can cause a sharp stabbing pain.

180
Q

Pulmonary Embolism:

A

Obstruction of pulmonary artery by blood clot, fat globule, or air bubble. Often fatal.
Passes from vein into right side of heart via vena cava and then tgravels throught the heart into pulmonary arter, obstructing blood flow.
Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) common cause

181
Q

Bronchogenic Carcinoma

A

Common type of lung cancer arising from bronchial epithelium

Smoking a major cause

Highly metastatic due to association with lymphatics in the bronchial tissue

metastasizes to brain and crainium

182
Q

Malignant Mesothelioma

A

rarer type of lung cancer affecting pleura (mesothelium)

caused by exposure to asbestos

can affect other internal organs.

183
Q

Pulmonary TB

A

bacterial infection of lungs. M. tuberculosis

spreads to other organs

contagion spread through air dropplets of infected individual

1/3 of world’s population currently infected, but only 5-10% become sick or infectious (active TB)
