Elevates hyoid during deglutition, depresses mandible against resistance
Sternohyoid
Manubrium and medial end of clavicle
Body of hyoid
Cervical anterior rami
Depresses hyoid after deglutition
Omohyoid
Superior border of scapula
Inferior border of hyoid
Cervical anterior rami
Depresses and retracts hyoid
Attaches to intermediate tendon/ sling
Sternothyroid
Posterior surface of manubrium
Oblique line of thyroid cartilage
CAR
depresses hyoid and larynx
Thyrohyoid
Oblique line of thyroid cartilage
Inferior border of body and greater horn of hyoid
CN XII hypoglossal n
Depresses hyoid and elevates larynx
Scalenes
Anterior C3-C6 transverse process
Middle C5-C7 transverse
Attach to the first rib
CAR
Bilateral cervical flexion
Unilateral: ipsilateral cervical sidebending, contralateral rotation
Carotid sheath
CVI
Common carotid artery (medial)
Vagus n
Internal jugular vein (lateral)
Psoas mj
Transverse processes of lumbar vertebrae- sides of bodies and IVD of T12-S1
Lesser trochanter of the femur
Lumbar plexus anterior branches of n L2-L4
Acting inferiorly with iliacus, flexes thigh
Acting superiorly, flexes vertebral column laterally to balance trunk
When sitting, acts inferiorly w iliacus to flex trunk
Iliacus
Superior 2/3 of iliac fossa, ala of sacrum, anterior sacroiliac ligaments
Lesser trochanter of femur, and shaft inferior to it and psoas mj tendon
Femoral n L2-L4
Flexes thigh, stabilizes hip joint, acts w psoas mj
Quadratus lumborum
Medial 1/2 of inferior border of 12th rib & tips of lumbar transverse processes
Iliolumbar ligament and internal lip of iliac crest
Anterior branches of T12&L1-L4 n
Extends and laterally flexes vertebral column
Fixes 12th rib during inspiration
External oblique
External surfaces of 5th-12th ribs
Linea alba, pubic tubercle, anterior 1/2 of iliac crest
Thoracoabdominal n
Subcostal n
Compress and support abdominal viscera
Flex and rotate trunk
Internal oblique
Thoracolumbar fascia, anterior 2/3 of iliac crest, connective tissue deep to inguinal ligament
Inferior borders of 10th-12th ribs, linea alba, pubis
Thoracoabdominal n
Subcostal n
First lumbar n
Compress and support abdominal viscera
Flex and rotate trunk
Transversus abdominis
Internal surfaces of 7th-12th costal cartilages, thoracolumbar fascia, iliac crest, inguinal ligament
Linea alba with aponeurosis of internal oblique, pubic crest, pubis
Thoracoabdominal n
Subcostal n
First lumbar n
Compress and support abdominal viscera
Rectus abdominis
Pubic symphysis and pubic crest
Xiphoid process and 5th-7th costal cartilages
Thoracoabdominal and subcostal n
Flexes trunk (lumbar vertebrae) Compresses abdominal viscera Stabilizes and controls tilt of pelvis (antilordosis)
External intercostal
Inferior border of ribs
Superior border of ribs below
Intercostal n
Elevate ribs during forced inspiration
Internal intercostal
Superior border of ribs
Inferior border of rib above
Intercostal n
Forced respiration, interosseous part depresses ribs, interchondral part elevates ribs
Serratus anterior
External surfaces of lateral parts of ribs 1-8
Anterior surface of the medial border of the scapula
Long thoracic n
Protracts the scapula and holds it against the thoracic wall
Rotates the scapula superiorly
Subclavius
Junction of 1st rib and it’s costal cartilage
Interior surface of middle 1/3 of clavicle
