Thorax 3 (The Heart) Flashcards
What’s the most posterior chamber in the heart?
Left Atrium
List the 3 vessels bringing deoxygenated blood back to the right atrium:
IVC, SVC and the Coronary Sinus
Which valve does blood from the right atrium entering the right ventricle pass through?
Tricuspid Valve
What’s the function of the Musculi Pectinati?
To provide extra power in the atria without massively increasing muscle bulk?
What’s the purpose of the embryonic foramen ovale?
Allows blood to move from the right etrium to left atrium directly, bypassing the lungs. Foetus’ don’t need to breath!!
What’s the function of the infundibulum in the heart?
Makes blood flow laminar, less turbulent when reaching the pulmonary trunk.
Function of papillary muscles and chordae tendinae?
To prevent cusp eversion during systole
Explain how an MI might affect valve competence?
MI causes death of the heart muscle. That could then affect the papillary muscles, which would directly affect the valve competence.
How many cusps does each papillary muscle send chordae tendinae to?
Two.
What gives rise to papillary muscles?
Trabeculae carneae
What causes the first heart sound?
The sound of the AV Valves closing. Due to ventricular pressure being greater than atrial pressure, the AV valves close to prevent backflow.
When does the first heart sound occur?
Start of systole
When does the second heart sound occur?
End of systole `
What causing the second heart sound?
Closing of the aortic valve. Aortic pressure is greater than the ventricular pressure, prevents backflow.
