Thoracic and Abdominal Wall Muscles Flashcards
Innervation of all Intercostal muscles
1st to 11th intercostal nn.
Action of External Intercostal muscle
Raises ribs (inspiration); supports intercostal spaces; stabilizes chest wall
Origin and Insertion of Internal Intercostal muscles
Lower margin of rib to upper margin of next lower rib ( courses obliquely forward and upward from costal angle to sternum)
Action of Internal Intercostal muscle
Lowers ribs (expiration); supports intercostal spaces; stabilizes chest wall
Origin of Transversus Thoracis muscle
Sternum and xiphoid process (inner surface)
Insertion of Transversus Thoracis muscle
2nd to 6th ribs (costal cartilage, inner surface)
Innervation of Transversus Thoracis muscle
2nd to 6th intercostal nn.
Action of Transversus Thoracis muscle
Weakly lowers ribs (expiration)
Origin of Diaphragm (Costal Part)
7th to 12th ribs (inner surface; lower margin of costal arch)
Origin of Diaphragm (Lumbar Part)
Medial Part: L1-L3 vertebral bodies, intervertebral disks, and anterior longitudinal ligament as right and left crura
Lateral Part: lateral and medial arcuate ligaments
Origin of Diaphragm (Sternal Part)
Xiphoid process (posterior surface)
Insertion of the Diaphragm
Central Tendon
Innervation of the Diaphragm
Phrenic n. (C3-C5)
Action of the Diaphragm
Principal muscle of respiration (diaphragmatic and thoracic breathing): aids in compressing abdominal viscera
Origin of Rectus Abdominis
Lateral head: Crest of pubis to pubic tubercle
Medial head: Anterior region of pubic symphysis
Insertion of Rectus Abdominis
Cartilages of 5th to 7th ribs, xiphoid process of sternum
Innervation of Rectus Abdominis
Intercostal nn. (T5-T12)
Action of Rectus Abdominis
Flexes trunk, compresses abdomen, stabilizes pelvis
Origin of External Oblique
5th to 12th ribs (outer surface)
Insertion of External Oblique
Linea alba, pubic tubercle, anterior iliac crest
Innervation of External Oblique
Intercostal nn. T7-T12
Action of External Oblique
Unilateral: Bends trunk to same side, rotates trunk to opposite side
Bilateral: Flexes trunk, compresses abdomen, stabilizes pelvis
Origin of Internal Oblique
Thoracolumbar fascia (deep layer), iliac crest (intermediate line), anterior superior iliac spine, iliopsoas fascia
Insertion of Internal Oblique
10th to 12th ribs (lower borders), Linea alba (anterior and posterior layers)
