Parallelism
Repetition of words, phrases, or sentences that have the same grammatical structure or that state a similar idea. (Parallelism, or parallel structure, helps make lines rhythmic and memorable and heightens their emotional effect).
Parallelism used as a rhetorical device
Using the same syntax, or sentence structure to point out a similarity In ideas
Rhetorical Devices
Used to shape explanations and evidence using logical, emotional or ethical apeals
Figurative Language
Refers to words or phrases that are meaningful, but not literally true. Some common examples would be use of similes, metaphors, idioms, hyperbole, and personification .
Idiom an expression
an expression that cannot be expressed from the meanings or its separate words but that has separate meaning of its own. Ex:”hold your horses” or “ the decision was up in the air”.
Maxim
A succinct formulation of a principle rule or basic truth about life. Usually clever maximums are like great saying somebody knows; a proverbial saying; a general truth, fundamental principles, or rule of conduct. For example Ben Franklin is the author of many, including “early to bed, early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy, and wise
Tone
The attitude of a speaker or writer takes towards a subject character or audience.
Imagery
Language that appeals to our senses of sight, touch taste or smell
Mood
The feeling a story evokes (the emotional effect). Ex the setting can provide mood or atmosphere that can affect the way we feel.
Parables
A usually short fictitious story that illustrates a moral attitude or a religious principle. Parables were told by Jesus! They are useful for story telling!
Context clues
The words and sentences surrounding a word. These can help you guess the meaning of an unfamiliar word or phrase .
