Third Stanza Flashcards
First swntence
Social injustice is highlighted through stanza three as the tone intensifies through the further harsh examples given
The stanza begins
Mid- sentence which emphasises the list of hardships are never ending, prompting a bleak view of England in the 18th century
The opening sentence is
‘Chimney sweepers cry blackening church appalls’ making the church look noticeably blackened, metaphorically in that the churches reputation was being besmirched by their blatant lack of response to the corruption of society with its subsequent interest in child labour
The word ‘appall’ means
A cover laid over a coffin, this influences the reader to think of the church as effectively read whilst burying its traditional principles in order to satisfy capitalist phenomenon
Due to such a seemingly
Virtuous and positive place being ‘blackened’ it demonstrates the extent to the corruption of capitalism, and their immense power to corrupt something so pure
Blake continues to talk about
The corrupt military, speaking of the ‘hapless soldier’s sigh runs in blood down palace-walls’
- deliberate use of sibilants provides an onomatopoeic hiss which conjures a particularly sinister atmosphere to emphasise the soldiers on going weakness, being forced into battle
The image of soldiers blood
Symbolically marking the palace walls shows walls of ultimate power which makes obvious to the whole of society that death and suffering are ever present around them
