Thinking Like a Diver Flashcards
What are the 4 Central Dive Skills?
1 - Planning Dives w/ Secondary Objectives
2 - Developing Situational Awareness
3 - Managing Task Loading
4 - Maintaining Good Dive Habits
What is the Primary Objective for Every Dive?
All divers return safely
What are Secondary Dive Objectives?
Anything divers want to accomplish beyond returning safely. Examples include sight seeing or photography
What is Outbound Air?
The air used to descend and carry out secondary objectives
What is Return Air?
The air used to return to the ascent point
What is Ascent Air?
The air used to ascend, make a safety stop, and exit the water
What is Reserve Air?
The air used for handing problems or emergencies. Ideally this air is never used
What is No Stop Time?
The time that a diver may theoretically spend at a given depth without having to perform any decompression stops while surfacing
What are the 8 elements of situational awareness?
1 - No Stop Top 2 - Environment 3 - Equipment 4 - Hazards 5 - Depth 6 - Navigation (Orientation and Location) 7 - Buddy Status and Location 8 - Secondary Objectives
You notice the following happening at the same time:
- Buddy waves
- Lost too much buoyancy
- Lost sense of direction
What framework can be used to prioritize tasks?
Dive First -> Situation Second -> Communicate Third
