Thinking and Stopping Distance Flashcards
What are the factors that might increase stopping distance?
1) Alcohol and Drugs
2) Tiredness
3) Distractions
4) High speed
What might cause braking distance to increase?
1) Greater speed
2) Poor road conditions (e.g. icy, wet)
3) Car conditions (poor brakes, too many people, bald tyres)
What is thinking distance?
The distance travelled in between the driver realising he needs to brake and actually braking
What is braking distance?
The distance taken to stop once the brakes are applied
What should you do to keep to the stopping distance?
1) Keep distance from the car in front
2) Keep to the speed limit
What is the word equation?
Stopping distance = thinking distance + braking distance
