Things to remember (Chap 6) Flashcards
Heat (q)+
When heat is absorbed by the system from the surroundings (endothermic process).
Heat (q)-
When heat is released by the system to the surroundings (exothermic process).
Work (w)+
When work is done on the system by the surroundings (the system gains energy).
Work (w)-
When work is done by the system on the surroundings (the system loses energy).
Enthalpy Change (H)+
Indicates that the process is endothermic, meaning the system absorbs heat (e.g., melting or boiling).
Enthalpy Change (H)-
Indicates that the process is exothermic, meaning the system releases heat (e.g., freezing or condensing).
Potential energy
the energy stored in an object due to its position or configuration. It is dependent on the object’s position relative to other objects and the forces acting upon it.
Kinetic energy
Kinetic energy is the energy of an object due to its motion. The faster an object moves, the more kinetic energy it possesses.
