Teresa of Avila saying

A

Let nothing disturb thee, nothing affright thee; all things are passing - God never changeth.
Patient endurance attaineth to all things; who God possesseth, in nothing is wanting. God alone sufficeth.

Te Deum (The Church’s hymn of thanksgiving)

A

We praise thee, O God; we acknowledge thee to be the Lord.
All the earth doth worship thee, the father everlasting.
To thee all angels cry aloud,
the Heavens and all the Powers therein.
To thee Cherubim and Seraphim continually do cry:
Holy, holy, holy Lord God of Saboath;
Heaven and earth are full of the majesty of thy glory.

The glorious company of apostles praise thee.
The goodly fellowship of the prophets praise thee.
The noble army of martyrs praise thee.
The holy Church throughout all the world doth acknowledge thee,
the Father, of an infinite majesty,
thine adorable, true and only Son,
also the Holy Ghost the Comforter.

Thou art the King of glory, O Christ.
Thou art the everlasting Son of the Father.
When thou tookest upon thee to deliver man,
thou didst humble thyself to be born of a Virgin.

When thou hadst overcome the sharpness of death
thou didst open the kingdom of heaven to all believers.
Thou sittest at the right hand of God, in the glory of the Father.
We believe that thou shalt come be our judge.
We therefore pray thee, help thy servants, whom thou hast redeemed with thy precious blood. Make them to be numbered with thy saints, in glory everlasting.

Q

Augustine of Hippo conversion story

A
  • after starting to study rhetoric, he adopted Manicheanism - which is a dualist religion that argues that the spirit world is good and the material is bad (eating, having sex)
  • he gave into hedonist desires - but eventually starting seeing a woman - relationship would last for 15 years (until converting)
  • as a teenager - saw a pear tree when with friends and stole the fruit - pleasurable derived from the fact that it was forbidden more than from the fruit itself (gave them to the pigs actually)
  • Machineanism was not filling his soul - his mother and friend encouraged him to become Christian and he started to listen to sermons by Ambrose
  • sent the woman away and was engaged to someone younger - more respectable in his eyes
  • apologetic career - on the holiness of the catholic church in 388
  • became ordained in 391 - so did not marry
  • believed that evil was a distortion of the good
