Things to Cram Flashcards
Littoral Zone
Shallow water at the shoreline. Abundant sunlight. The end of this zone is where rooted plants stop growing. Freshwater.
Limnetic Zone
Ample light; surface of open water, extends to the depth where light can penetrate. Algae rely on light for photosynthesis. Freshwater.
Profundal Zone
Sunlight cannot reach (aphotic zone). Freshwater biomes.
Benthic Zone
Deepest layer in freshwater biomes, low DO and low temperatures.
Coastal Zone
Closest to land, between the shore and the end of the continental shelf (oceans)
Euphotic Zone
Light, upper layers of water. Warmest region of the ocean, high DO, photosynthesis occurs.
Bathyal Zone
Middle region of the ocean, insufficient light for photosynthesis. Cool water
Abyssal Zone
Deepest region of the ocean, extremely cold temperatures, low DO, high nutrients because of decaying plant and animal matter from the zones above.
What 3 things in the US use the most water?
Irrigation, thermoelectric power, public supply
Law of Superposition
In a sequence of rock strata, the oldest layer will lie below or underneath the youngest.
Law of Original Horizontality
Layers of sediment, such as you would have in the bottom of a lake, or the ocean, are deposited by gravity into flat layers.
Law of Cross-Cutting
If a rock layer is cut by a fault or igneous intrusion, the rock that is cut must be older than the layer that cuts it.
Law of Lateral Continuity
Rock layers will extend outwards until the environment that produced them changes.
