Proclamation of the dogma of the Immaculate Conception
-that Our Lady was conceived without original sin, preserved from original sin by a special grace, and she was conceived without sin by a special privilege from God who forsaw the merits that Our Lord would gain for her by dying on the Cross

-more European powers got involed against Russia
-Causes: increasing Russia expansion and Empire building
-the balance of power was going to be upset
-Russia invaded Austria (Austria got upset)
-Russia considered taking Turkey
-They didn’t want Russia to expand any further west
-fought primary in Crimea and in the Baltic Sea
-Not fought in major land battles except Crimea
-Austria stepped in at the beginning of the war asking France and England if they were willing to sign a peace treaty
-Significant: almost Russia vs. ALL (almost WWI)
-what were the results: russia lost very little; No significant redrawning of European borders

Franco-Prussian War and Birth of Germany
-cause: Bismark insulted the French, French declared war on prussia as a result; Bismark didn’t just declare war on France because he wanted it to seem like the Prussians were being vicimized by the terrible French people: he wanted France to be the bad guys; TOTALLY ORCHESTRATED BY BISMARK; The Prussians wanted the German speaking provices of France (Alsace and Lorraine)

-it has to be binding on the whole Church - this is the Catholic faith if you don’t assent you’re not Catholic
