Theroy - Human Perception & Visual Design Primitives Flashcards
1
Q
What is Perception?
A
Perception is the process by which we interpret the world around us, forming a mental representation of the environment.
2
Q
What is Change Blindness?
A
If our focus gets interrupted, we might be unable to see significant changes that occur in a scene. The phenomena could happen because of inappropriate attentional guidance.
3
Q
What is Selective Attention?
A
- Attention is a limited resource.
- Humans are not very good at splitting their attention.
- Usually, we switch between tasks and do not do them simultaneously.
4
Q
What is Inattentional Blindness
A
- Not paying attention to things you don’t focus on.
- Even every-day things that are in plain sight.
- Also referred to as Visual Neglect.
5
Q
What is Pre-Attentive Processing?
A
Immediately recognizing variation with little conscious effort (<200–250 ms).
6
Q
What is Attentive Processing?
A
Taking deliberate effort to perceive differences.
7
Q
List 4 metric of Channel Effectiveness
A
- Accuracy
How precisely can we tell the difference between encoded items? - Discriminability
How many unique steps can we perceive? - Separability
Is our ability to use this channel affected by another one? - Popout
Can things jump out using this channel?
