-Bleeding or hemorrhage
-Over an area of compromised circulation

-Thrombophlebitis (risk of blood clot)
-Irradiation to eyes or reproductive organs

-directly over joint cement or plastic components
US contraindications
-impaired circulation, cognition, or sensation
-over open epiphyseal plates
-over malignant tumors, thrombophlebitis, or myositis ossificans
-recently irradiated tissue
-over/near cardiac pacemaker
-over abdomen, low back, uterus, or pelvis during pregnancy
