Thermotherapy Flashcards
Thermotherapy effects?
Vasodilation
release of chemical mediators
Thermo neuromuscular effects?
- increases conduction velocity
- increases pain threshold through gating
- decrease in muscle strength
What does thermotherapy do to metabolic rate?
increases metabolic rate
Does heat increase collagen extensibility?
True
What are some indications for thermotherapy?
accelerated healing via increased circulation, enzymatic activity and availability of oxygen
What are some contraindications for thermotherapy?
- recent or potential hemorrhage
- thrombophlebitis
- impaired sensation
- impaired mentation
- malignant tumor
- IR irradiation of the eyes
What are some precautions for thermotherapy?
- acute injury
- pregnancy
- impaired circulation
- poor thermal regulation
- edema
- cardiac insufficiency
- metal in the area
- over an open wound
- demyelinated nerves
What is the average treatment time for hot packs?
15-20 min
What is the protocol for contrast bath?
3-4 min in warm water then 1 min in cool water.
Repeat for 4-5 sequences. End in warm water
total treatment time 25-30 min.
what do you need to document for contrast bath?
- temp of two baths
- interval of time between hot and cold
- total treatment time
