Thermoregulation Flashcards
Thermoregulation
Temperature deviation detected by hypothalamus
Methods used to increase heat loss or decrease heat production
More sweating Vasodilation Hairs lie flat on skin Reduced metabolic rate Behavioral mechanisms
Methods used to decrease heat loss or increase heat production
Erect body hairs Vasoconstriction More shivering Less sweating Behavioral mechanisms
Endotherms at low and high temps
Use physiological, anatomical and behavioral mechanisms to maintain internal body temp within narrow margins
At low temps, increase rate of respiration, oxygen consumption to release more energy as heat
At high temps, decrease rate of respiration, oxygen consumption to release less energy as heat
Ectotherms at low and high temps
Rely on behavioral mechanisms to try and maintain an optimum temperature but will generally show a greater range of temperatures
Rate of respiration and oxygen consumption depends almost solely on the external temperatures
