thermoregulation Flashcards
1
Q
structures that regulate body temperature
A
blood vessels under the skin surface (vasodilation and vasoconstriction)
sweat glands (produce more or less sweat that evaporates from surface of skin)
2
Q
how does body regulate rise in body temperature
A
- thermoreceptors in skin and hypothalamus are stimulated by increase in body temperature
- arterioles in skin dilate to allow more blood to flow through capillaries for more heat to be lost
- sweat glands produce more sweat which increases heat loss from body when water from sweat evaporates
- metabolic rate decreases to reduce amount of heat released within the body
- body temperature decreases
3
Q
how does body regulate fall in body temperature
A
- thermoreceptors in skin and hypothalamus are stimulated by fall in body temperature
- arterioles in skin constrict to allow less blood to flow through capillaries for less heat to be lost
- sweat glands produce less sweat so less heat is lost when water in sweat evaporates from skin
- metabolic rate increases to increase heat released within body
- body temperature increases
