Thermoforming Flashcards
Thermoforming
Process of pulling heated plastic into a mold by forcing the plastic down into the mold walls
Three different ways to form plastic down
Vacuum. Air pressure and Mechanical Pressure
Advantages of Thermoforming
Cost is low. Not complex forming method. Can produce large parts
Disadvantages of Thermoforming
Output rate is low and cycle time is high. Dimensional accuracy is only fair. Products to have thinning in corners. Large amount of scrap waste.
Three ways to heat teh plastic
Electric rod. Ceramics. Gass/flame
Transport Mechanism
This is the mechanism that transports the plastic sheet into the heater and out of it.
Clamp Ring
This is the part that rests on the plastic to keep it in place
Cavity Mold
This is the part that the plastic gets sucked into and is the product.
Vacuum Pump
This is the thing that creates the vacuum
Surge Tank
This is where the vacuum is stored and also where the air is sucked into
Hydraulic ram
These are used to push up the mold cavity or push down the plug assist
Vacuum Table
This is the part that is attached to the mold cavity and will such down the air to bring the plastic down
Cooling Blower
This is a fan that is used to cool the plastic once it is in the cavity mold
Plug assist
This is a thing that can push into eh plastic sheet to create a seal for the mold
