Thermodynamics Vocabulary Flashcards
A measure of the average kinetic energy of the particles in a sample of matter
Temperature
The entropy of a pure Krystal at 0K is zero
Third law of thermodynamics
A measure of the energy released or consumed when one mole of a substance is created under standard conditions
Heat of formation
The amount of heat energy absorbed or release from a chemical reaction
Enthalpy
A form of energy transferred between objects with different temperatures
Heat
Tendency for a system to go to a lower state of energy or become more random
Spontaneous
For a spontaneous process the entropy of the universe increases
Specific heat capacity
The phase change that occurs when a solid becomes a gas
Sublimation
For a spontaneous process the entropic the universe increases
Second law of thermodynamics
A substance changes from one state of matter to another
Phase change
Energy can not be created or destroyed only transferred
First law of thermodynamics
System releases energy to the surrounding
Exothermic
System absorbs energy from the surroundings
Endothermic
Used to help determine the likelihood of a reaction being spontaneous
Gibbs law
A measure of the disorder or randomness of a system
Entropy
