Thermodynamics Flashcards
How does t.d help us
-It helps predict feasibility of reaction
- It determines the extent of the reaction
-It determines the suitable conditions needed for the reaction
-It calculates the efficiency of engines
-It calculates the maximum work done by a system
What is thermodynamics
It is the process of transformation of energy
Limitations of t.d
-It deals only with macroscopic objects
-It does give the rate of the reaction
- It doesnt give details of the mechanism
What is system
It is the specific part of universe under study. It is isolated from the rest of the world by a boundary
What is surroundings
The rest of the universe other than the system is called suroundings
What is boundary
A boundary is a real or imaginary wall between system and surroundings
Types of boundaries
1.rigid wall- its position is fixed. If impermeable doesnt allow passage of matter
2. adiathermic wall- does not allow passage of both matter and energy
3. diathermic- does not allow passage of matter but allows energy
Three types of systems
Open system- Exchaange of matter and energy . not properly insulated or covered
-closed system- Exchange of energy only. Closed not insulated
3.Isolated- No exchange of matter or enerrgy
Write about state functions
The state of a thermodynamic system is described by a specific value of certain parameters called state functions. Depends only on initial and final state and is path independent
Thermodynamic variables
Pressure, temperature, volume
Write about path functions
These variables depend on the path taken . example work and heat as they do not depend on the initial and final stat but on how the state is achieved
What is extensive properties
Property that depends on the amount of substance present in the sample
What is intensive properties
Property that doesnt depend on the amount of substance present in the sample
What is thermodynamic process
The transition of a thermodynamic state from initial to final state is called t.d process
