thermodynamics Flashcards
what is thermodynamics ?
it is the branch of physics that deals with the concepts of heat and temperature and the inter - conversion of heat and other forms of energy.
zeroth law
if two systems are each in thermal equilibrium with a third system, they are in thermal equilibrium with each other.
internal energy
it is the energy associated with the random, disordered motion of the molecules of a system. it is the total energy of a substance’s all atoms/molecules.
thermodynamic system
it is a collection or a group of objects that can form a unit which may have the ability to exchange energy with its surroundings
open system
a system that freely allows exchange of energy and matter with its environment.
closed system
it does not allow exchange of matter but allows energy to be transfered.
isolated system
it is completely sealed. neither matter nor heat can be exchanged with its environment.
thermodynamic process
it is a process in which the thermodynamic state of a system is changed.
heat
the energy that is transferred due to temperature difference that exists between the system and its environment. denoted by Q.
intensive and extensive variables
intensive variables do not depend on the size of the system. extensive variables do depend on the size of the system.
quasi static system
such processes in which change in the state variables occurs infinitesimally slowly.
