thermodynamics Flashcards
chemical reactions?
process that changes chemical substances. reactions interact and are used up to form products. numbers before molecules is how many there is.
exergonic?
exothermic + catabolic, reaction releases energy.
endergonic?
endothermic + anabolic, reaction captures energy.
metabolism?
all catabolism and anabolism in an organism.
enzyme?
the protein binds reactants and helps them –> products. always all body chemistry requires enzymes. different enzymes have different pH requirements.
alleles?
for malfunctioning enzymes –> genetic disease.
water?
electrophilic - O created polar bonds with H. partial charges poles attract anything electrically charged. hydrogen bonds provide cohesion. cohesion provides surface tension. cohesion gives high heat carrying capacity for liquid water.
acids and bases?
fraction of H2O molecules split to hydronium and hydroxide. equal proportions equal a neutral solution. acids have a pH lower than 7, they contain more hydronium than hydroxide. bases or alkaline have more hydroxide than hydronium and have a pH greater than 7.
