Thermochemistry Flashcards
Thermochemistry
Study of the quantity of heat absorbed/given off by Chemical reactions
Thermodynamics
Science of the relationships between heat and other forms of energy
Energy
Potential or capacity to move matter
- units- joules(j)= kg*m2/s2
- Calories(cal)- used by chemists. Equal to amount of energy needed to raise the temperature of 1 gram of water 1 degree Celsius.
- 1 cal= 4.184 joules
Kinetic energy(Ek)
Energy of motion
Ek= 1/2 mv2
Potential energy(Ep)
Energy an object has based on its position.
Ep= mgh
Internal energy(u)
Kinetic energy and potential energies of the particles in a substance
Law of conservation of energy
Energy can only be changed, not created or destroyed.
Heat (q)
- Energy that flows due to a temperature difference
- Energy will flow until an equilibrium is reached
Heat of reaction
The amount of heat needed to return a system to its initial temperature.
Endothermic reaction
Absorbs heat
Exothermic reaction
Heat is released
Enthalpy (H)
Used to obtain Heat gained/lost in a reaction. At a constant pressure, the change in enthalpy will equal the Heat of the reaction.
