Thermochemistry Flashcards
What is Chemical potential energy?
Energy stored in the chemical bonds of a substance.
What is Thermochemistry?
Study of energy changes that occur during chemical reactions and changes in state.
What are the ways in which energy changes can occur?
Either heat transfer or work or combination of both.
What is Heat?
Represented by q. Energy transfers from one object to another because is a temperature difference between objects.
What is System?
Part of the universe in which you focus your attention.
What is Surrounding?
Everything else in the universe makes up.
What is Law of conservation of energy?
Stated that in any chemical or physical process energy is neither created or destroyed.
What happens to the energy if the universe during a chemical or physical process?
The energy of the universe remains unchanged.
What is Endothermic process?
Heat is absorbed from surrounding.
What is Exothermic process?
One that releases heat to its surroundings.
What is Heat capacity?
Amount of heat needed to increase the temperature of an object exactly 1 C.
On what factors does the heat capacity of an object depend?
On mass and it’s chemical composition.
What is Specific heat?
Amount of heat it takes to raise the temperature of 1 g of the substance 1 C.
What is Calorimetry?
Measurement if the heat flow into or out if a system for chemical and physical process.
What is Enthalpy?
System accounts for the heat flow of the system at constant pressure.
