Thermochemistry Flashcards
Thermodynamics was derived from the Greek word “thermes” meaning _____ and “dyno” meaning _____
heat, power
This deals with the study of energy and its transformation
Thermodynamics
specific part of the universe that is under our interest.
system
Three types of systems
Open system, closed system, isolated system
This system is characterized by a free exchange of matter and energy. Therefore, both matter and energy can flow from the system to the surroundings or from surroundings to system.
Open system
The wall of this system is permeable and diathermal
Open system
There is still a free exchange of energy in this system but in terms of MATTER, the exchange with the surroundings is NOT possible due to an impermeable wall which not allows the flow of mass from system to surroundings and vice-versa.
Closed system
The exchange of both matter and energy to the surrounding in this system is not possible because of having a wall that is impermeable and adiabatic
Isolated system
This include everything else except the system in the universe.
Surroundings
This separate the system and the surroundings
Boundary / Wall
Type of wall that is immovable
Rigid
Type of wall that is movable
non-rigid
This type of wall allows matter to pass through it
Permeable
This type of wall does not allow matter to pass through
Impermeable
Heat cannot be passed through it
Adiabatic
